City Chic After 1

Knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the living area opened up the entire floor plan. A long, narrow island with rich gray oak cabinetry in a brown finish and stark white CaesarStone quartz countertop defines where the kitchen ends and the living area begins.

Asian Inspiration

Before After Asian Inspiration Before 1

The old kitchen featured a Frankensteinian design that crossed traditional country design with '90s contemporary elements. White country cabinets clashed with metallic tile backsplashes and the counters' black glossy finishes. To carry this kitchen into the 21st century, the designer planned to bring new colors to the room. Eliminating the room's clunky island and its ceiling counterpart was also important to create a more streamlined, Asian-inspired look.

Fresh & Functional

Before After Fresh And Functional Before 1

This cramped, U-shaped kitchen forced cooks into tight corners. Despite the kitchen's all-white palette, cabinets hanging over the peninsula prevented the room from feeling light and airy.

Working Out the Work Triangle

Working Out The Work Triangle Before 1

For this family, the triangular island tried to do too much at once, with a cooktop and prep sink consuming most of its surface. The single level also made it difficult to separate the cooks from the diners.

A Chef's Work Triangle

A-Chefs Work Triangle After2

Cameron's new cooking area is the kitchen's focal point. While a wide, arching cherry mantle detail conceals the hood liner, wood paneling, scrollwork and fine molding complement the kitchen's design elements. Cameron chose a 48-inch Dacor range with six burners and dual-fuel technology for her culinary routine.

A New Outlook on the Outdoors

Before After A New Outlook on the Outdoors-Before-2

Double doors led to coat closets that the family seldom used. The walls, painted a basic white, left the kitchen feeling unlived in.

By eliminating the small peninsula and exterior door, the designer added ample wall space for more storage and appliances. Birch cabinet panels conceal the refrigerator and its freezer drawers. Above the triple windows and white apron sink, a display shelf adds extra space for cookware and collectibles.

A Cozy Transition

A Cozy Transition After 2

Yellow faux painted walls provide a cozy glow to the kitchen. Raised-panel glazed maple cabinetry and gold garnet granite countertops give the room its warm personality while a stainless steel built-in refrigerator, suspended ventilation hood and glass pendant lights give the room a contemporary edge.

Working Out the Work Triangle

Working Out The Work Triangle Before 2

The homeowners wanted to replace the old kitchen's tile countertops, floral wallpaper and other country design elements with a whimsical but classic look that would last for years to come.

Fresh & Functional

Before After Fresh And Functional Before 2

A living and dining area sprawled across from the kitchen, taking up valuable space in the room's floor plan. Designer Amy Sandack, AKBD, removed a wall and moved the kitchen to this larger area, allowing for extra storage and surface space while still incorporating living and dining areas.
