Design Notes: To function for a family of seven, one of whom had trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, this kitchen required a gas cooktop with a French burner; a warming drawer, and wall ovens with speed, steam and convection capabilities. Simple horizontal lines keep the design clean and contemporary, with a painted green wall, onyx tile backsplash and reddish quartz countertop for color.

Tucking a cleanup sink around the corner, eliminating wall cabinets, and integrating appliances behind white high-gloss polyester panels or pocket doors helped preserve the harbor view. Green products included low-VOC paint and cabinets made from zero-emission plywood with a reconstituted wenge wood finish.

2011 NKBA Design Award: Budget-Friendly- Best ofLinn's Prestige Kitchens & BathsDestin, FLDesigner: Allison McCowan

Design Notes: A small kitchen gets a big makeover for a budget under $40,000. Selecting a 30-inch Viking range that had slight damage gave these aspiring chefs a professional-grade appliance at an affordable price. The homeowners installed the tile and sewed the banquette cushion themselves for additional cost savings. Cutting back in these areas allowed them to spend on cabinet organizers, the slate floors, LG stainless steel appliances and Corian countertops.

Products and Materials: Schrock maple cabinetry in Dover finish, Corian countertops in Medea, Corian sink in Glacier White, Kohler faucets, Viking range and ventilation, LG dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator

Green and Lean Kitchen

Santa Monica Kitchen with Green Cabinets by Bruce Bolander

Kitchen by Bruce Bolander

Design Notes: The clients who commissioned this kitchen wanted to make sure it allowed for a spectacular view of the verdant Santa Monica mountain range. At the same time they didn't want it to have a color scheme that shirked from the vibrant colors outside. The result is this vivid green kitchen with massive windows that look out to the mountainside. The room features high-pressure laminate cabinets, a solid surface countertop and a stained concrete floor. This kitchen is set in a modest-size California home-about 1,500 square feet-and according to designer Bruce Bolander "[the kitchen] really anchors the space." Even though it's somewhat small in stature, by having a wall of windows and a sliding door to the outside, the kitchen feels larger than it is.
