Design Notes: With a soaring truss ceiling and two islands, this large French country style kitchen swathes its space in shades of butter yellow and blue. The cabinets reach 10 feet high, taking advantage of the room's lofty height and adding extra storage options. Two sinks, dishwashers and refrigerators make plenty of extra storage, prep and clean-up for these homeowners to entertain.

Design Notes: A 2-foot bump-out and restoration of the original, higher ceiling enlivened this Pullman-style kitchen. The use of copper, hickory, antique bronze, bead board, and granite, as well as a tile backsplash that alludes to the weave in a basket, create a medley of texture, sheen and color that gives visual punch to this small space.

2011 NKBA Design Award: Medium Kitchens - Second Place Glen Alspaugh Co., LLPSt. Louis, MODesigner: James E. Howard, CKD, CBD
Design Notes: Bright, tropical-colored cabinetry in finishes of oranges, blues and greens enliven this open plan kitchen. The homeowners selected the vibrant palette for the cabinets, which were hand-painted and distressed on site by a local artisan and designed to match the yellow-orange walls. Spanish Mediterranean-inspired tile graces the backsplash and a tall plaster hood stretches up the length of the 13-foot ceiling. Topping off this colorful pool-house kitchen is a 48-inch cobalt blue Viking range.

Design: To turn a one-cook kitchen into a room that functions for four without looking cluttered, the designer relied on two pantries and deep drawers instead of wall cabinets, with floating shelves for everyday items. A wall of appliances, including a speed oven, a steam oven and an espresso machine, completes the kitchen.
